Tapped my Octopus card to pay the bill at a local cafe in Hong Kong.
Cashier: Bye.
Me: Ok. (In my head: Who hurt you?)
In Hong Kong bye is considered peak customer service
Bye means
“Thank you so much for shopping with us today. It was truly a pleasure helping you, and I really appreciate you choosing our store. I hope everything brings you lots of joy—have a wonderful rest of your day, and please come back and see us again soon. Take care!”
in Hong Kong
Wow, they said "Bye"? That already counts as speaking too much from a cashier. Usually they just say "Next!"
that’s normal what do u want her to say lol
"thank you, come again!" or simply "thank you"?
In Hong Kong, the rudest thing is wasting other’s time
No small talk here. That’s considered peak service as pointed by others.
Don’t block the earth from turning la
Why would you assume the cashier is hurt just because he/ she gave a succinct, neutral, no-time wasted response?
How delicate are you? Cashier said bye. Another ten min on weather?
Small talk is more rude cuz its wasting time.
HK people are like mirrors, they generally reflect the same attitude they receive. They prioritize efficiency, but if you show friendliness, most would reciprocate.
The invention of Octopus is for tap & GO in 1 second. The whole process ends when both parties heard the “du” sound. “Bye” is already a bonus.
We are not rude. We just don’t bullshit.
As a HKer, they usually just say "next".
I think they upgraded the service to "bye" since you're tourist lol
Bro needs princess treatment
Hong Kong people are very very rude, don’t take it personal.
Bruh ‘Bye’ is considered as PEAK service in Hong Kong. You can’t expect more from that.
The cashier is so nice to even saying goodbye with you.
(The next customer: Get out my way mate)
Average Hongkongers leave so fast after they paid they can’t even hear that “bye”
You should try a Hong Kong cafe call Australia Dairy Co for memorable experience.

Are you a princess or something? Did you want a farewell speech
What you want her to do ? Suck your toes?
? So the "bye" literally hurts u?
Can't believe that someone received extra polite/ kindness/customer service, but still isn't satisfied
Actually they seldomly reply whenever customers leave, to hear a bye, has already been a VIP.🥴
The highest form of respect in HK is not wasting others’ time. Bye is just right, goodbye is already too much 💀
Hk people cares about efficiency, this is normal, not rude.
You have got a bye what more do you want
how are you offended by “bye”?
Nobody owes anybody conversation.
They said "bye" to you???
Give them a five-star! That's equivalent to a bow. 👏
Consider yourself lucky if you are getting a “bye” from HK cashier
Sounds like HK isn't for you
You're leaving and the cashier said bye
🤔I don't see any problems with it
Are you make out of glass ?
Well I can assure you that the cashier doesn’t have much chance to say bue after the octopus tap.
Thank you for your kindness sir on granting a chance of bye for the cashier
Bye is considered a very friendly greeting in hk
Same as hi how is thing going today etc?
Or you rather enjoy people telling you “fuck off” next time when you finished your purchase?
wtf??? A cashier actually said bye? Amazing manners.
Hongkongers dont do small talk. They prefer not to talk at all when possible.
Sorry we don’t do meaningless small talk here lol
We order pay and go
in most cases the machines "beep" is the "bye"
