IR systems are passive until launched. The aircraft usually picks up the launch plume though.

the two shoot downs we have on video so far show zero countermeasures. so i’m not sure how good those missile detectors are. particularly against manpads vs a large sam or aircraft. the u.s. has not expected to face manpads since vietnam.

We faced MANPADS in Iraq and Afghanistan. Just old Soviet models.

i think the difference is in those countries the us had a much bigger advantage in the air. this administration is being reckless, obviously. and iran has known this was coming and it looks like they have been working hard on developing these ir based systems. it looks to me like they’re tracking from a non emitting ground station and guiding the missile. i’m sure it’s got a seeker, but the ground station, whether this is manpads or on a truck or whatever, is tracking very well.

Also, when you know there is a MANPAD threat, you remain above their engagement zone. Why the F-15 was below it will need to be addressed. They can prosecute ground targets outside of the threat engagement zone.

You would have thought that our intelligence assessment as part of the Military Decision Making Process would have highlighted this as a significant threat to aircraft and effective countermeasures taken…

I suspect the intelligence assessments weren’t read/listened to/comprehended at the highest leadership levels.

The biggest issues are: 1) we were/are catching up on Drone warfare. It fundamentally changed war, the way that things like rifled barrels, barbed wire and machine guns changed war
2) since Vietnam we’ve been locked into a mindset of any personnel loss is a “loss” of panic level disaster.

We lose 2-3 planes, but destroy their entire air force and navy and somehow it’s a “defeat”.
We’re just not willing to commit.
